“A riveting, wrenching, horrifying and beautifully told story.”

This film won the Palme d’Or at Cannes - the ultimate prize in many eyes. It is from Romania and is the first of a trilogy about the years under Ceausescu’s rule. In those years abortion was illegal, and therefore open to much abuse. The film charts the pursuit of an illegal abortion for her friend, by a young girl, but it is much more than this. Featuring superb, naturalistic performances it addresses a range of issues, not the least of which is  a philosophical contemplation of victimisation both personal and political, as well as heroism and endurance.
