Andrew Dominik
Andrew Dominik
“it’s obviously a lot more of a political undertaking making a movie in Hollywood and it’s a business there. In Australia, they don’t expect films to make money; whereas in America they’re counting on it. So, it’s a whole different deal."
“A film is an animal all by itself. The tone to the book gives you a feeling and you try to translate that into sounds and images,.”
Although born in New Zealand, Dominik was raised in Melbourne from the age of 2. He graduated from the Swinburne Film and Television School in 1988. In 2000 he burst on to the movie scene with the electrifying Chopper which launched both he and his star, Erik Bana into the bigtime in Hollywood, though it would be several years before Dominik brought his next film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford to fruition. I have found no reference to what he did between Swinburne and Chopper. He is currently working on an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel Cities of the Plain. He admits to a fascination with murder but has no real explanation as to why.
