Bertrand Blier
Bertrand Blier
“My characters are lost women and so they’re dangerous because we don’t know what they’ll do in the story. I’m attracted to this figure of a tarty woman who goes anywhere, does anything, like a man who drinks, who gives too much of herself and who’s dying from damnation”
Born in 1939, the son of an actor, Bertrand Blier began his career in film in the 60s, initially working for others, and then directing his first film Hitler? Connais Pas! in 1963. Since then he has made several films in a distinctive, somewhat misogynistic style - rather cynical comedies that probe the relationships between men (often a pair of men) and women. Late in life he has discovered writing and is contemplating spending more time with theatre, where there is a more direct audience interaction, and with writing novels.
