Guillermo del Toro was born in Mexico in 1964  and was raised by his Catholic grandmother.  He studied at the University of Gudalajara.  His interest in film began at the early age of eight, and he executive produced his first film at the age of 21.  But for some time he worked as a make-up director, and also in television.  He has worked on Hollywood blockbusters such as the  Hellboy films and Blade II, but has also worked on two films set in fascist Spain, of which Pan’s Labyrinth is one.  He is currently working on The Hobbit with Peter Jackson and has a very full future diary which includes Frankenstein, Slaughterhouse 5 and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
