Director: Hsiao-hsien Hou

The wonderful Juliette Binoche stars in this, our first French film of the year - one which takes as its starting point the much-loved 1956 children’s film The Red Balloon.  Once again there is a red balloon hovering over a child, but this time it is not so clear whether the balloon is real, even to the child, or not.

Although French, the film is made by the acclaimed Taiwanese director, Hsiao-hsien Hou, whose films patiently evoke the lives of real people and the society in which they live.  In this film he turns his gaze on the French - on a single mother trying to do the best by her introspective son, and also on a group of Taiwanese puppeteers and the Taiwanese nanny who comes into their lives.  A quiet, rewarding film about lives transformed by new relationships.
