“Like the many facets of a diamond, the human heart can find its lustre in dark places. Ang Lee's tortuous film about love and betrayal takes passion through highs and lows as it leads us through its tense and riveting journey” Louise Keller - Urban Cinefile
“What is graphic and raw and adult and disturbing are the roiling, dangerous emotions underlying the hot, sweaty, etc sex. and everything that leads up to it and everything that occurs outside of the bedroom because of it.” MaryAnn Johanson - Flick Filosopher
The ever surprising Ang Lee does it again with another switch to a totally different kind of film from his last (Brokeback Mountain). Or is it such a leap really? Like Brokeback Mountain it is the story of a doomed relationship, the sexuality is explicit and erotic, there is violence too. so perhaps not so different after all. A young girl, in Shanghai, starts a relationship with a ruthless politician in the collaborative wartime government in Shanghai, in order to assassinate him - but of course it gets complicated. Starring the amazingly versatile and excellent Tony Leung and newcomer Wei Tang this is set to be one of the highlights of our year.
Enjoy being immersed in a complicated and provocative relationship and ponder on whether the time and place, so different from our own, are factors in that relationship’s development.
