Martin Provost
Martin Provost
“For me it’s a form of respect not to emphasise or underline, but to plant the seeds of uncertainty.”
“I create cards featuring the sequences I have in mind and then I write it all down, doing my best to visualize the actual film. After that, Marc joins in the dance. He’s very good with everything that is structural, analytical. My work is based more on sensations, on intuition, on what’s visual. We are extremely complementary. It was a very beautiful collaboration.“
Martin Provost left his native Brittany whilst still quite young to become an actor in Paris, where he found parts on stage and on screen, eventually becoming a principal actor at the Comédie Française where he stayed for six years. At this time he also had his first novel published. A later novel was shortlisted for the Prix Fémina - a major French prize. He also decided to relaunch his cinematic career, first with some shorts, and then with his first feature - a comedy - Tortilla y Cinema. This was followed by his second feature Le Ventre de Juliette, and then, five years later, by Séraphine. Provost writes all his films, sometimes in collaboration with others, sometimes on his own.
