“A solid film with clear intentions -- to thoughtfully entertain. If you walk out of Milk and not be moved then you are missing a little soul.” Clay Cane - BET.com
“It's filled with so much vitality...that one comes away admiring the filmmaking while feeling deeply touched, even inspired, by the fiery life at the film's center..” Jay Antani - Cinema Writer.com
Two of Hollywood’s mavericks - Sean Penn and Gus Van Sant, combine here to provide a surprisingly mainstream biopic on the life of Harvey Milk - first gay man to be elected to a political position in America - for which he paid with his life. This is not to damn with faint praise, for Penn and Van Sant are both phenomenally talented and breathe new life into this moving story of a man who changed attitudes, though perhaps not quite enough - why else would Van Sant feel the need to make the film? The acted story is interspersed with newsreel footage of the real Harvey Milk and the events that brought him to prominence. Penn’s performance has garnered many awards, including an Oscar, but his contribution is matched by the excellence of the rest of the cast and of the crew who transformed reality on to the big screen.
Oscars for Best Actor and Best Screenplay and many many more
