The Secret of the Grain

La Graine et le Mulet

    August 31

“one of the most remarkable films of 2008, in part because it masterfully extends certain sequences not only to let them play out before our eyes but also to invite reflection even as the film is still running.  Robert Davis - Paste Magazine

more complicated than it sounds, less geared toward uplift than in revealing the fault-lines within this sprawling, multi-generational family and between their immigrant culture and their French hosts.”  Scott Tobias - Onion AV Club

An extended family of Tunisian immigrants in Sète in the south of France, launch into converting an old wreck of a ship into a restaurant.  But the film is really an exploration of the family itself and of the cultural differences they confront by living in France.  A top ten film on many lists.

Explore what it is to be different - an exile in a foreign land, and come to understand that families are much the same everywhere.
