The Misfits

Betty Jope Tribute Screening

    July 27

“A brave deconstruction of the Wild West’s mythos, as well as a searing study of the lingering death of the American Dream.”  Dan Jardine - Apollo Guide

“two hours of viewing uncomfortable and disturbing enough to catch in your mind like a fishbone.”  Damian Cannon - Movie Reviews UK

The last film of both Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable has lots of emotional baggage attached.  They both died shortly thereafter.  Its screenwriter, Arthur Miller, was in the process of a messy divorce from Marilyn Monroe - all of which adds to the poignancy of this elegy to the passing of the ways of the old wild west.  The leads - all five, give outstanding performances and Monroe was never lovelier.  The cinematography is superb, the direction from John Huston overcame all obstacles.  A classic which is rarely seen and which had a mixed reception at the time.

Enjoy the difference of a film from a more ‘innocent’ period of film-making and the stark beauty of black and white.
