“My inspirations are from people and the street. It’s not from sitting in a room and formulating things from the back of my head.”
“I'm a storyteller, I want to tell stories about all kinds of people, from all over the world. Also as a Pacific storyteller, I feel it's important that we don't let others pigeonhole us. Bare, No. 2, Dean Spanley, they all have in common the idea of connection, across suburbs, national boundaries, generations, emotional barriers... It's what I do, I connect.“
Born of a Fijian father and British mother in London, the family moved to Auckland in 1989, where he attended Sacred Heart College and the University of Auckland. Fraser fell into writing plays, through having acted whilst at univesity, and achieved instant success. From a very early age, however, he had wanted to direct films - with much encouragement from his grandmother in particular. One of his plays, the multiple prizewinning No. 2, became his first feature film which also picked up prizes at festivals around the world, including the Audience Award at Sundance.
