Tomas Alfredson
Tomas Alfredson
“I do think that categorization of films is not for directors to make, genre is a word for marketing people. I aim to complicate subsistence as much as possible; I think it’s my task as an artist. Categorizing is for people who want the opposite.”
“I think that framing is so interesting to work with active framing that you point out of the frame as much as you point into the frame. What don’t we see is as important as what we see, and there are so many details that you can see and put your eyes on in wide shots that’s so interesting.”
Born into film - his father Hans was an actor/director - Tomas Alfredson cites his early life watching his father as ‘his university’. He began his film career as an assistant at Svensk Filmindustri, then made music videos and finally moved into a very successful television career, including the founding of channel TV4. A lot of his output at this time seems to have been comedy, including a series called Bert, from which he eventually made a very successful feature film. His first films were comedies, in association with comedy group Killinggänget. They also created stage performances, and new feature films, one of which won several of the Swedish film awards. Let the Right One In, is a complete change of mood and also the film that has brought him international attention. Hollywood is going to remake it! His brother Daniel is also a film director.
