Pedro Almodóvar has a storytelling style all of his own.  He is one of modern cinema’s great ‘odd men out’.   He also has a great rapport with women and this film is full of them.  In it he is reunited with two of his ‘muses’ Carmen Maura and Penélope Cruz.   (The title, Volver , in fact refers to a return).  The ensemble cast is so good that it won the award for best actress at Cannes.  Nevertheless Cruz is outstanding as the women at the centre of the tale who holds it all together in spite of disaster all around.  Vibrant to look at  and uplifting  in its humanity, this tale of mothers and daughters, sisters and aunts is uniquely entertaining and moving all at the same time.e.
