You, the Living

Du Levande

Made of 50 short, stiff scenes of human behavior, shot as dispassionately as wildlife, Andersson is either stretching the definition of cinema or returning it to its roots”  Amy Nicholson - Boxoffice Magazine

this litany of human disconnection, misery, frustration and despair... would be an almost unbearably bleak mosaic of our living deaths, were it not for Andersson's profound appreciation of Chaplin's observation that comedy is tragedy seen in long-shot.”  Anton Bitel - Channel 4 Film

Rotten Tomatoes rates its films out of 100%.  This is the first time I have seen a film achieve 100%!  The percentage is calculated from the proportion of good reviews to bad.  And yet it does not seem to have won any major awards - maybe it didn’t enter for them.

You will not see another film like this one this year, possibly ever.  Words such as poetic and surreal, and influences as varied as Chaplin, Tati and David Lynch have been thrown around by critics.  Life with all its pain and joy is here in this episodic catalogue of life in the twenty first century in Sweden.

Enjoy the difference of a unique filmmaker and a very different, offbeat way of looking at life.
