Joining a film society for the first time can feel a little daunting. You might wonder whether you’ll know anyone, what happens when you arrive, or whether you’ll feel out of place. The good news is that there’s really nothing to worry about. A film society is simply a group of people who share a love of movies, and you’ll find that many members are friendly, welcoming and happy to chat.
At Croydon Film Society, our aim is to create a relaxed and enjoyable cinema experience where members can discover great films and connect with other movie lovers. We screen a mix of mainstream, independent, English-language and international films at Metro Cinemas Boronia, giving members the opportunity to see movies they may not otherwise discover at their local cinema.
Feeling nervous? You’re not alone
It’s completely normal to feel nervous when attending your first film society screening, particularly if you’re coming on your own. You certainly don’t need to arrive with a group of friends. Many people come because they want to meet new people who enjoy cinema as much as they do.
Once you arrive, you’ll simply check in, find your cinema and settle in for the movie. There’s no pressure to introduce yourself to everyone or participate in anything you don’t want to.
More than just watching a movie
One of the things that makes a film society different from an ordinary trip to the cinema is the sense of community. After screenings, members are invited to get together for coffee and dessert at Crave Café, where they can chat about the film, share opinions and meet other members. (Croydon Films)
You can also rate each film through the society’s Starbox system and have a say in future film selections. Members are invited to vote on films as part of the annual program selection process.
Come along and give it a try
You don’t need to be a film expert or know anything about foreign cinema. You simply need to enjoy watching movies and be open to discovering something different.
Whether you’re a lifelong movie lover, looking for a new social activity, wanting to meet people in the local community, or simply curious about joining a film club in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Croydon Film Society is a great place to start.
So leave the nerves at the door, grab your popcorn and enjoy the experience. Your first film society night could be the beginning of many great movies, conversations and friendships.
